Paradigmatic Morphology
نویسنده
چکیده
We present a notation for the declarative statement of morphological relationships and lexieal rules, based on the traditional notion of Word and Paradigm (cf Hockett 1954). The phenomenon of blocking arises from a generalized version of Kiparsky's (1973) Elsewhere Condition, stated in terms of ordering by subsumption over paradigms. Orthographic constraints on morphemic alternation are described by means of string equations (Siekmann 1975). We indicate some criticisms to be made of our approach from both linguistic and computational perspectives and relate our approach to others such as Finite-State Morphology (Koskenniemi 1983), DATR (Gazdar and Evans 1989) and object-oriented morphophonemics (de Smedt 1984, Daelemans 1988). Finally, we discuss the questions of whether a system involving string equations allows a reduction to finite-state techniques.

Analytic Morphology - Merging the Paradigmatic and Syntagmatic Perspective in a Treebank
We present an account of analytic verb forms in a treebank of Czech texts. According to the Czech linguistic tradition, description of periphrastic constructions is a task for morphology. On the other hand, their components cannot be analyzed separately from syntax. We show how the paradigmatic and syntagmatic views can be represented within a single framework.
متن کاملAn Analysis of Persian Compound Nouns as Constructions
In Construction Morphology (CM), a compound is treated as a construction at the word level with a systematic correlation between its form and meaning, in the sense that any change in the form is accompanied by a change in the meaning. Compound words are coined by compounding templates which are called abstract schemas in CM. These abstract constructional schemas generalize over sets of existing...
متن کاملMorphotactics in an information-based model of realisational morphology
In most recent work, Crysmann and Bonami () suggest to reconcile the insights of inferential-realisational morphology (Anderson, ; Stump, ; Brown and Hippisley, ) with the full typology of variable morphotactics: situations where the expression of analogous feature sets can appear in various positions in the string. e authors proposed to account for these facts by importing, in...
متن کاملMeasuring compositionality in phrasal verbs
This paper demonstrates how to measure the compositionality of phrasal verbs using corpus frequencies from the BNC. This allows us to distinguish semantically transparent phrasal verbs (they lifted up their hats) from opaque ones (they summed up their feelings). Working by analogy to paradigmatic approaches to morphology (Moscoso del Prado Martín et al 2004), I use information theoretic terms t...
متن کاملThe Formation of Ethiopian Semitic Internal Reduplication
Semitic word formation has proved particularly contentious over the past several years with respect to the notion of the 'root' and 'template'. While traditional grammarians viewed Semitic words as consisting of roots and patterns (involved in paradigmatic relations), this approach has proved insufficient for certain kinds of word-formation that appear to require correspondence between words, s...
متن کاملParadigm Completion for Derivational Morphology
The generation of complex derived word forms has been an overlooked problem in NLP; we fill this gap by applying neural sequence-to-sequence models to the task. We overview the theoretical motivation for a paradigmatic treatment of derivational morphology, and introduce the task of derivational paradigm completion as a parallel to inflectional paradigm completion. State-of-the-art neural models...
